Description
This is a Beta/Pre-release, or more accurately: Beta 1, version 7.000 released to the public in January 2009, but dated December 2008. It is not the final version of Windows 7. It should only be installed by users who understand the risks of installing Beta/Pre-release software. If you have never installed an operating system before, or have no experience with beta software or full backup and recovery procedures due to an operating system failure, then do not download the beta (unless you want to engage in a character building exercise).

Okay, if you are still here...Windows 7 is the latest version of Microsoft's flagship operating system. According to the software behemoth, the final is due out some time in 2010, although history suggests this is not a particularly reliable guide. This beta gives you insight into what to expect and may be helpful to XP users who are considering skipping the whole tragic Vista upgrade. While many users will be focusing on what's new in Windows 7, looking at what has been dropped can also provide some insight. A bunch of useful tools such as Windows Mail, Calendar, Photo Gallery, Movie Make, and Contacts will down be spun off as a bundle that has to be downloaded separately to the operating system. Other things to get the boot are the Classic Start Menu (boo), Windows Sidebar (woohoo) and Meeting Space (does anyone care?).

Already Windows 7 seems to be better than Vista (with SP2), even in this early beta stage. However, we're still not convinced that it is a better experience than Windows XP with SP3. We'll just sit back and watch as the compatibility issues unfold. In the meantime, if you're game, get a copy of the download.

Notes:
  • This is the 32bit version
  • The download is a huge (2.5GB) DVD ISO, so you'll need to burn it to a DVD before commencing the installation.
  • The file will download directly from Microsoft's servers, if they're working properly.
